John Spencer - CATS Teacher

I am really excited about the opportunity to be a CATS teacher. Although I am still learning about technology, I have had many opportunities to integrate technology into my daily lessons.  I believe that technology skills are crucial in the age of the "Flat World."  I am passionate about bridging the Digital Divide.  Yet, I also believe that technology is not a fix-all.  Technology integration is always a trade-off, and occasionally, it can be a real Faustian one.  So, teachers and students alike must think well about technology.  Here are my five goals as a CATS teacher:

Goal #1 - Develop meaningful professional development to increase technology literacy

  • Occasional weekend workshops
  • Technology mentoring - I am available to help
  • Bi-weekly, optional professional development

Goal #2 - Compose relevant online resources for staff members of Borman

  • CyberLounge - a teacher discussion board that connects teachers to expertise, community and resources
  • Borman Wiki - a way for teachers to collaborate
  • Lesson Plan Database - an easily accessible database of lessons that are aligned to the standards and follow SIOP protocol
  • Create at least five online tutorials
  • Offer an assessment of various freeware and open source programs

Goal #3 - Create and implement technology-integrated curriculum

  • Collaborate with other Social Studies teachers
  • Begin the process in 2007-2008, but launch the full-scale project in 2008-2009

Goal #4 - Implement cost-effective methods of increasing technology integration into the classroom

  • $100 laptops, freeware software, LINUX operating system
  • Restoring formerly useless iMac G3's so that teachers can run mini-labs in classrooms
